RSHE

Dear Parents and Carers,

As a part of your child’s educational experience at Wold Newton Foundation School, we aim to promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive taught programme of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education that gives children and young people the knowledge, under-standing, attitudes and practical skills to live healthy, safe, productive and fulfilled lives, both now and in the future.

As you may already be aware, the Department for Education has announced changes to relationships, sex and health education (RSHE) following nationwide consultation. These changes came into effect from September 2020 although due to the COVID crisis, have been delayed until the Summer term of 2021. All schools will be required to comply with the updated requirements.  The statutory guidance can be found at:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/relationships-education-relationships-and-sex-education-rse-and-health-education

This means that we have been reviewing our RSHE (Relationship, Sex and Health Education) curriculum and policy so we can be sure our RSHE provision is appropriate for our pupils based on their:

  • Age
  • Physical and emotional maturity
  • Religious and cultural backgrounds
  • Special educational needs and disabilities

The changes have been made to ensure that our provision will prepare children for life in modern Britain. Much of the content will be familiar as we have effectively taught PSHE for many years. To accompany this letter, there are two documents that would be useful for you to read:

  • Understanding Relationships and Health Education in your child’s primary school: a guide for parents
  • Our school’s (Draft) Relationships, Sex and Health Education (R.S.H.E) Policy

On our website, the above documents as well as our planned progression document showing when and how each objective will be taught, will be available in the: Curriculum/PSHE/RSHE page.

This RSHE policy will replace our current ‘Relationships and Sex Education’. It is also important to note that parents will still have the right to withdraw their child from some or all of the formal sex education/conception part of the policy, currently delivered by the school nurse to all children in year six. Other objectives in the RSHE curriculum are statutory. In order to keep you informed, the school will seek your permission for the delivery of the sex education part of the curriculum before each time it is taught in year six.

Whilst I hope that these documents will provide the information you need to understand how RSHE will be taught, I understand that you may have further questions that you would like to discuss. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact myself via Class Dojo, by E-mailing the school or telephoning myself at school before the 12th March, 2021.

Kind regards

Mrs K Kelly

Our school's (draft) policy for teaching RSHE. This will be regularly reviewed and updated once the parent consultation is complete.

This shows where and how the objectives for RSHE will be taught within our school.
