Phonics
At Wold Newton we begin introducing phonics from nursery using the multi sensory approach based on "Jolly Phonics." Children enjoy learning through sounds, actions songs and rhyme. We move to a more structured approach in Reception with a daily phonics session, using Jolly Phonics with pupils taking a reading book home relating to the phase they are learning at school.
Some pupils may also take home a second book linked to their phonics phase but with additional trickier words and words they may not have encountered in phonics yet; we encourage parents to share these books with pupils to enjoy a love of books and reading.
Phonics teaching continues into Class 1 for Year 1 and 2, again with daily sessions and close collaboration between the EYFS and Class 1 to ensure pupils are supported at the stage they need using the Jolly phonics scheme. We feel that it is important for pupils to have a concrete understanding before moving to the next phase and encourage them to consolidate their knowledge at each stage through writing, spotting phonics taught in books, rhyme and fully decodable books.
Phonics interventions then take place for any pupils who move into Year 3 and 4 but may still need consolidation in some areas.
Alongside phonics teaching we strive to give all pupils a love of reading. Guided Reading takes place from Reception and continues throughout school. This begins as sharing a big book, understanding how to use picture clues and introducing basic reading strategies, moving to guided reading covering a variety of genres in Class 1, 2 and 3.
